Dental implants are used to replace natural teeth that no longer reside in the mouth due to extraction or decay. Implants are an investment that many people find worthwhile. Here are four questions that will help you decide if you should get dental implants:

1. Do you desire a permanent tooth replacement solution?

Dental implants aren't the only solution for people who are missing teeth. Dental bridges and dentures are also available. However, dental implants are the most permanent tooth replacement solution. Unlike dentures, dental implants do not need to be removed periodically. Many people prefer dental implants over bridges since dental implants do not impact a person's surrounding teeth. If you'd like a permanent tooth replacement option that you can treat just like normal teeth, implants are a good choice.

2. Do you have multiple teeth to replace?

Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth. However, they can also be used to replace multiple teeth. Multiple prosthetic teeth can be attached to a single dental implant. People who are missing all of their teeth can take advantage of dental implants, as well. Just four implants can be used to anchor a full set of replacement teeth in a patient's mouth.

3. Do you have sufficient bone mass?

Dental implants are secured into your jawbone. During the operation, your dentist will make an incision in your gums and drill a small hole into your jaw. As your jawbone heals, it will fuse to the implant, holding it in place. In order to have dental implants placed in your mouth, you'll need sufficient bone mass in your jaw. During your initial consultation, your dentist will perform an X-ray to determine if you have the right anatomy for dental implants. If you have insufficient bone mass caused by bone erosion, you may be a candidate for a bone graft, which will need to be completed before your implant procedure.

4. Are you willing to undergo several dental procedures?

The dental implant procedure is lengthy. It's often performed over the course of several dental appointments, with healing time between each. Dental implants are a good choice for people who are comfortable with the idea of undergoing several dental procedures. If you have anxiety about dental procedures, talk to your dentist about possible anxiolytic options. Nitrous oxide or oral sedatives may be options that can make your dental implant procedures more comfortable.
